FDA Warns Consumers About Potentially Dangerous Dietary Supplements
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported last month that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was warning consumers not to use several dietary weight loss supplements because they contain pharmaceutical ingredients, some of which may be potentially carcinogenic.
The supplements are:
- Bali Mojo– contains the active ingredient in the prescription erectile dysfunction medication Cialis and is advertised as “herbal Viagra that works”.
- Citrus Fit Gold– contains sibutramine, a controlled substance, according to the Plain Dealer, that can elevate pulse and blood pressure.
- Thinogenics and Hot Detox– also contains sibutramine and are sold as appetite suppressants and fat burners.
- Tonic Life BP– contains phenolphthalein, a laxative ingredient the FDA banned in the 1990s because it is potentially carcinogenic, according to the Plain Dealer.
According to the paper, the FDA is advising consumers not to take these products and to throw away any if they have supplies at home. The agency said that the products have been removed from shelves.
