Dr Reddy’s Recalls Generic Hypertension Drug

In June, Reuters reported that Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd recalled 13,560 bottles of the high blood pressure drug metoprolol succinate in the United States after it failed a dissolution test.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, metoprolol succinate is the generic form of AstraZeneca Plc’s Toprol XL. As we reported recently, Wockhardt Ltd. (WPL), an Indian drug maker, recalled some bottles of its generic version of Toprol XL this year for the same reason.

Dr Reddy’s started the recall on May 23, according to Reuters. Dissolution tests are conducted to check the time taken for the active ingredient in a drug to release into the body, and help predict how the drug performs inside the body, the news source reported.

The FDA has received some complaints relating to a lack of effectiveness when it comes to these drugs. More than 40 billion prescriptions are filled for Toprol XL each year, Bloomberg News reported during the Wockhardt recall.
