Merck Finalizes $100 Million NuvaRing Settlement
According to the Associated Press, last week it was announced that a $100 million settlement involving the birth-control device NuvaRing would stand, because the vast majority of claimants have chosen to opt into it.
The lead attorney in the case reportedly told the AP that 95 percent of eligible claimants opted into the settlement, and the agreement has been finalized with Merck. The AP reported that about 3,800 claimants would share in the settlement.
NuvaRing has been on the marketplace since 2002. The product is a ring that releases two hormones into the vaginal wall, ethinyl estradiol, a type of estrogen that is used in contraceptives, and a progestin called etonogestrel.
Lawsuits against Merck claim that the device suffered through faulty design and testing, and that its side effects were not properly disclosed. Lawyers said that the device has been linked to blood clots, strokes and heart attacks, high blood pressure and heart disease and cancer of the reproductive organs and breasts.
Additionally, it has been reported that there have been 83 wrongful death lawsuits filed nationally due to the device.
