Have there Been Benicar Injury Lawsuits Filed in Ohio?
Have you suffered injuries due to Benicar use? Multiple cases have been filed, including several in Ohio and New Jersey, and they all allege patients were harmed after taking the drug Benicar.
On December 18, 2014, attorneys representing a group of Ohio plaintiffs filed a motion with the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML). The motion asks the federal court to consolidate Benicar cases filed around the country in the Northern District of Ohio, Cleveland division.
Drug makers and defendants Daiichi Sankyo and Forest Labs have not yet responded to the motion for consolidation.
Benicar’s Uses
Benicar is an angiotensin II receptor blocker approved in 2002 for the treatment of hypertension with other antihypertensive agents. Benicar is known generically as olmesartan. Azor and Tribenzor, which are other drugs that contain olmesartan, are also linked to health complications.
Benicar is alleged to cause severe intestinal sprue-like enteropathy, a condition similar to celiac disease. Additionally, some victims have reported chronic diarrhea and/or substantial weight loss.
Has the FDA Issued a Benicar Recall?
In 2013, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a drug safety communication indicating a need to change Benicar’s warning label to include the risk of “sprue-like enteropathy, including that the enteropathy may take months to years to develop.”
The announcement reportedly came after 23 incidents were reported to the agency’s Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS). Patients were reported to have developed diarrhea and other symptoms. However, the FDA has not issued a recall of Benicar or taken the drug off the market thus far.
