Louisiana Files Granuflo & NaturaLyte Lawsuit
Have you developed injuries or lost a loved one following dialysis treatment at a Fresenius Medical Care facility?
According to the Shreveport Times, the state of Louisiana has filed a lawsuit against Fresenius Medical Care North America over the use of two dialysis drugs, GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, which have been linked to cardiac arrest.
The news outlet reported that the federal government has recalled the products. The lawsuit states that Fresenius violated Louisiana law in an effort to “defraud dialysis clinics, physicians, the state and its residents.”
In March 2012, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a Class I recall, reporting that the products could cause serious health problems or death.
The lawsuit indicates that the company knew as early as 2004 that its products, if not used properly, could elevate dialysis patients’ bicarbonate levels and increase a risk of a heart attack, but the company did not warn the public about the dangers.
In 2010, in an internal study, the company discovered that 941 dialysis patients at 667 of its clinics suffered a cardiac arrest during treatment.
