The Dangers of Weight Loss Supplements
The FDA has an ongoing list of tainted weight loss products. The following weight loss supplements contain hidden drug ingredients: Lite Fit USA, Infinity, and New You. These warnings are just for the month of April.
“FDA laboratory analysis confirmed that Lite Fit USA contains sibutramine. Sibutramine is a controlled substance that was removed from the market in October 2010 for safety reasons.”
Sibutramine is alleged by the FDA to have potential adverse side effects such increased blood pressure and/or pulse rate. Other risks may arise in patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. Sibutramine may also interact with other medications that could lead to life-threatening.
The FDA makes the following note in their public notification: “Note: This notification is to inform the public of a growing trend of dietary supplements or conventional foods with hidden drugs and chemicals. These products are typically promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, and body building and are often represented as being ‘all natural.’ FDA is unable to test and identify all products marketed as dietary supplements that have potentially harmful hidden ingredients. Consumers should exercise caution before purchasing any product in the above categories”
