Endo International Agrees to $830 Million Transvaginal Mesh Settlement

According to Reuters, Endo International Plc, a transvaginal mesh manufacturer, has agreed to pay $830 million to resolve claims made by women who were injured by its products.

The news outlet reported that the settlement would cover a “substantial majority of the mesh litigation brought against its American Medical Systems [AMS] subsidiary.” As part of the agreement, the manufacturer did not admit liability of fault.

Endo and AMS are among several device manufacturers facing lawsuits over transvaginal mesh products. Other companies include C.R. Bard, Boston Scientific, and Cook Medical Systems.

Reuters reported that as of February 20, Endo and AMS together faced approximately 22,000 lawsuits over the transvaginal mesh devices. In addition to this settlement, last year, Endo agreed to pay $54.4 million to settle an undisclosed number of mesh cases.

Women implanted with the devices have suffered from pain during sex, bleeding, and other complications. Due to the high number of issues, in 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered transvaginal mesh manufacturers to conduct safety studies and monitor the rate at which adverse events were reported.

Last month, the FDA said that it was going to consider proposals to tighten standards for mesh products and require manufacturers to submit data proving the devices’ safety before allowing them to enter the marketplace.
