Former Olympic Hopeful Involved in NuvaRing Litigation

According to LifeSiteNews.com, a former Olympic hopeful who sustained multiple blood clots and was forced out of the 2014 winter games is speaking out over the contraceptive NuvaRing.

The site reported that Megan Henry, a decorated skeleton racer, began using NuvaRing in 2012 and within 10 days of using it began to experience problems breathing. She ended up going to the hospital where she was told that she had multiple blood clots in her lungs.

Because of the health issues the device allegedly caused her, she was unable to participate in the games.

NuvaRing’s are inserted into a woman’s vagina and are suppose to remain for three weeks at a time. The ring released progestin and estrogen, preventing ovulation and inhibiting sperm penetration. The device has been linked to blood clots, stroke and/or heart attack.

Due to her experiences, Henry joined almost 4,000 other people in alawsuit against NuvaRing manufacturer Merck. Last month, the plaintiffs combined were offered a $100 million settlement.

“Plaintiffs can either opt in or not, but the settlement is a laughable offer to rectify damages, considering Merck brings in over $4 billion in profit. A settlement offer of $100 million across nearly 4 thousand people is hardly compensation,” Henry said to LifeSiteNews.com.

“It will be hard [to accept the settlement],” said Henry, to the site. “A lot of families who lost daughters are just heartbroken. They feel they cannot morally accept the compensation, and other people just feel they cannot accept knowing that Merck is essentially getting away with murder.”
