Fungal Meningitis Victim has a Painful Recurrence

Fungal Meningitis Victim has a Painful Recurrence

Last year there was an outbreak of fungal meningitis as a result of contaminated steroids produced by New England Compounding Company (NECC).

In recent news reported by the Tennessean a 73-year-old experienced a meningitis relapse.

At the confirmation of the initial recurrence report Spokeswoman Rebecca Climer of St. Thomas Health released a statement that the St. Thomas West Hospital is currently contacting original fungal meningitis victims to follow up on their health to determine if they are experiencing symptoms of a recurrence.  This is in response to at least one identified recurrence case.  The treatment for this is difficult.  60 Minutes of CBS News did a report back in August which shows the toll that the treatment takes on the victims.  You can view this video by clicking here.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are currently 750 outbreak cases within 20 states.  The death count is currently at 64.  Ohio facilities that received the contaminated steroid injections that were recalled 9/26/12 include:
