Homeopathic Drug Company Announces Recall After Penicillin Scare
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the voluntary recall of Terra-Medica’s Pleo-FORT, Pleo-QUENT, Pleo-NOT, Pleo-STOLO, Pleo-NOTA-QUENT, and Pleo-EX homeopathic drug products after it was determined that they may contain penicillin.
This is extremely troubling, as many Americans have severe penicillin allergies.
“In patients who are allergic to beta-lactam antibiotics, even at low levels, exposure to penicillin can result in a range of allergic reactions, from mild rashes to severe and life-threatening anaphylactic reactions,” the FDA said in a release.
The recall reportedly includes 56 lots of drugs. The label “Distributed by SANUM USA Corp.” reportedly identifies the affected products. Expiration dates range from March 2014 to May 2018.
The FDA said that Terra-Medica will be notifying customers by letters and emails about the recall and will work with distributors on a return policy. Customers can reportedly call Terra-Medica’s Customer Service Department directly if they have questions about the recall.
Are There Legal Options If I Have Been Injured By a Recalled Drug?
It should be noted that homeopathic products often do not go through the same trials or testing other drugs go through. This means that potentially dangerous over-the-counter homeopathic drugs and supplements could lead to consequences like allergic reactions, personal injuries and death.
