Houston Woman Files Lawsuit After Daughter Dies From Alleged Pharmacy Error

According to ABC News, a Houston woman is suing a pharmacy claiming that a dosage error led to her daughter’s death.

Simone Allen claims that her 6-year-old daughter Jadalyn died after taking a dose of morphine 10 times higher than her prescription called for in April 2012. “They gave me the medicine to help her with her pain, and it ended up killing her,” Allen told ABC News.

Jadalyn suffered from sickle cell anemia. The lawsuit was filed against Cullen Care Pharmacy in Harris County District Court. Jadalyn’s official cause of death was “morphine toxicity,” according to the lawsuit.

The family’s lawyer said that he was hoping to have the case settled out of court, but the pharmacy blamed the child’s death on her blood disorder.

Allen claimed that she gave her daughter a single dose of the oral morphine solution, which was dispensed at a dose of 20 milligrams per 1 milliliter rather than the prescribed 20 milligrams per 10 milliliters, according to ABC News. Allen’s lawyer said Jadalyn’s death was handled as a criminal investigation until her involvement was ruled out.

“I don’t want anyone to ever have to go through what I’ve been through,” Allen told ABC News.

In a case like this, no amount of compensation can ever bring a dead family member back. Allen told reporters her lawsuit is not about the money; rather, she wants all pharmacies to pay more attention to the training of employees.
