Listeria Outbreak: Have Apples Been Recalled?
Updating a blog post we brought you last week, a California company has issued a recall of its Granny Smith and Gala apples after two strains of Listeria monocytogenes were found at a processing plant.
The apples, supplied by Bidart Bros., are allegedly responsible for the caramel apple recall that has affected the nation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said after swabbing surfaces at the plant that it found several samples containing bacteria.
As of last week, the listeria outbreak had been linked to the deaths of three people, as well as 32 illnesses in 11 states. Those who experience injuries reportedly suffer symptoms including fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal problems.
The apples involved in the recall were sold under the names Big Big and Granny’s Best. The public is being told to ask stores if their Granny Smith or Gala apples came from Bidart Bros., while avoiding caramel apples that may have been linked to the processing plant.
