LIPITOR- Drug Information
Lipitor is the brand name for the drug atorvastatin. It was brought to the U.S. market in 1996 by the Warner-Lambert Company, which was subsequently acquired by Pfizer. Lipitor is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) that is designed to lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Lipitor works by preventing an enzyme in the liver from creating low density lipids.
Danger of Diabetes from Lipitor
Lipitor has been found to cause Type 2 diabetes in women. Diabetes is a chronic condition that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. With type 2 diabetes the body does not use insulin properly (i.e. insulin resistance). If left untreated, type 2 diabetes can be deadly. It also increases your risk for many serious health problems.
Despite this finding, Pfizer continued its extensive and aggressive marketing, making over 125 billion dollars in sales.
FDA Warning Regarding Lipitor
On February 28, 2012, the FDA ordered Pfizer to make a label change for Lipitor to add a warning concerning possible increases in HbA1c and fasting serum glucose levels. However, the warning added by Pfizer remains inadequate as it is silent as to a diabetes connection or the importance of monitoring blood glucose levels.
Current Status of Lipitor Litigation
Lawsuits focused on women who have developed type 2 diabetes from Lipitor use are now being filed nationwide. These lawsuits allege that Pfizer failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the potential and serious risk of type 2 diabetes from Lipitor use.
