Protein Powder Recalled Over Food Poisoning Fears

Last fall, we wrote a post about how there were widespread reports of hidden ingredients in dietary supplements and nutritional products.

Shockingly, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), in a study, more than two dozen supplements that were recalled after they were found to contain anabolic steroids or prescription drugs were found back on the market for purchase with the same ingredients. Many advocates say this is a problem, because in many cases, supplements and dietary products do not have to go through the same clinical trials that other drugs go through before being sold.

In addition to the dangerous items found in these supplements, it is not uncommon for recalls to occur due to poor manufacturing conditions, which may allow for contamination. In a recent case, a New York nutritional product manufacturer had to recall protein powders after it received 17 complaints from people who developed “transient gastrointestinal symptoms consistent with staphylococcal food poisoning.”

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Aloha Premium Protein powders, sold by Project Healthy Living Inc. of New York, have been recalled due to alleged issues with staphylococcal food poisoning among people ingesting the products.
