The drug company, Pfizer, named as one of the defendants in national litigation has officially responded to the claims their antidepressant drug Effexor caused birth defects.
In a statement sent to the Pennsylvania Record by media relations manager, Steve Danehy, the company said that while it supports the efficient and consistent adjudication, it still insists that its drug benefits many people across the country.
On August 6, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (“JPML”) issued an order sending the nine pending civil Effexor actions against Pfizer and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to the District Court in Philadelphia.
Five of the complaints originated in the Eastern District. The others were initiated in the Southern District of California, the Northern District of Illinois, the Northern District of Mississippi and the Northern District of Ohio.
Effexor comes with a number of serious side effects. Since its release, some people have complained of birth defects to the heart and lungs. Some studies suggest that pregnant women are at a higher risk for these types of side effects in their unborn children.
