According to Wall St. Cheat Sheet, drug manufacturer Novartis AG has recalled more than five million blood pressure medications after a photocuring agent allegedly contaminated the drugs during the packaging process.
The recalled drugs include Exforge, Exforge HCT, Tekturna, Tekturna HCT, and Diovan, as well as Stalevo, a medication that treats Parkinson’s disease, and Lescol XL, a drug that helps lower cholesterol, according to a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) safety report.
The recalled drugs were reportedly physician samples.
A photocuring agent used in ink reportedly contaminated the drugs during the packaging process, according to the Wall St. Cheat Sheet. Novartis claimed that the ink does not pose a safety risk for consumers, and the FDA classified the recall as “Class 2”, which occurs when there is a chance of a “temporary” health condition by taking the product.
This is not the first Novartis recall; over the last few years, the manufacturer has had to re-collect several of its over-the-counter medications including Excedrin, Bufferin, Gas-X, and NoDoz.
