The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported last week that Bedford-based Ben Venue Laboratories is recalling an inhaled drug solution used in nebulizers because a glass particle was found in a vial of the drug.
According to the Plain Dealer, one lot of the medication is being recalled. The drug is acetylcysteine, which is used in solution for inhalation and is most often delivered via a nebulizer. The paper reported that it is used to treat chronic bronchitis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as some cancers, epilepsy, and counteracting Tylenol and carbon monoxide poisoning.
The paper reported that use of the product could be life threatening because “inhaled glass particles can cause airway obstruction, leading to choking, wheezing, difficulty breathing, coughing and coughing up blood.”
The lot number for the drug is 2005479 with an expiration date of March 2014. Patients who have the drug should return it to their pharmacist. German drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim Corp. owns Ben Venue Laboratories.
