While taking Lipitor, Betty Pauley of Charleston, West Virginia developed Type 2 Diabetes, which has been alleged to be as a direct result of the medication. Now, instead of trying to manage her cholesterol, she must also contend with diabetes for the rest of life. Her lawsuit is Betty Pauley v. Pfizer, Inc., Case No. 13-cv-17178, U.S. District Court, Southern District of West Virginia, (July 3, 2013).
In 2012, a study conducted by the University of Massachusetts Medical School found postmenopausal women are at a higher risk for developing Type 2 diabetes while taking Lipitor. Type 2 diabetes is now considered an unreported side effect of the drug, resulting in danger to some consumers who trusted its safety.
This is not the first study to suggest the connection. Other published studies have also found an increased risk for diabetes.
