If you take Pradaxa (dabigatran), you should use caution. The drug has been linked to a higher risk for fatal health problems when compared to individuals using the blood thinner Warfarin.
In a study of more than 9,400 Medicare patients diagnosed with atrial fibrillation in 2010 and 2011, performed by the University of Pittsburgh, major bleeding occurred in 9 percent for those taking Pradaxa and nearly 6 percent for those taking Warfarin, according to WebMD.
“To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to compare the safety profile of dabigatran and warfarin using a nationally representative sample of Medicare beneficiaries,” the researchers wrote, according to WebMD.
The study noted that the risk of major bleeding events was particularly high among black patients and people with chronic kidney disease.
Patients taking Pradaxa were also more likely to have gastrointestinal bleeding, according to WebMD.
Pradaxa is used to prevent stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation. The researchers published their information in the November JAMA Internal Medicine.
