Drug manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim has been fined $931,000 for misplacing or withholding files associated with Pradaxa litigation.
The drug company allegedly withheld files containing information about several patients who have filed lawsuits against it.
U.S. District Judge David Herndon, who is currently hearing more than 1,700 Pradaxa lawsuits in multidistrict litigation (MDL) in East St. Louis, Illinois, concluded that Boehringer Ingelheim was negligent in the preservation of Pradaxa files, which included information about the early development of the drug, which is used as a blood thinner for patients at-risk for strokes or blood clots.
Pradaxa has been linked to serious and oftentimes fatal bleeding. According to the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), in 2012 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System received more than 3,200 reports of problems associated with the drug. Among the reported problems were hemorrhaging, acute renal failure, stroke and even death.
Currently, there are more than 1,700 Pradaxa lawsuits pending against Boehringer Ingelheim throughout the country. Our defective drug attorneys at the law firm of Zoll & Kranz, LLC represent victims and the families of victims injured or killed because of defective drugs like Pradaxa.
