Wockhardt Ltd. (WPL), an Indian drug maker, is recalling some bottles of its generic version of the heart pill Toprol XL after the drugs failed dissolution tests.
Dissolution tests are conducted to check the time taken for the active ingredient in a drug to release into the body.
According to Bloomberg News, the recall targets 109,744 bottles of the drug, known generically as metoprolol succinate. The news service reported that there are about 40 billion prescriptions filled for Toprol XL each year, with generics taking a big part of the market.
Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning an extensive study of generic Toprol XL.
Last year, two Wockhardt facilities in India were placed on the FDA’s import-alert list. At the facility that manufactured metoprolol, FDA inspectors found faulty quality controls and raw-material storage areas with mold growth, according to Bloomberg.
FDA complaints against the drug have included a lack of effectiveness and troublesome side effects, according to a review of 3,425 adverse incident reports.
