Two patients injected with recalled products from Specialty Compounding in Texas have died. At least seventeen patients are believed to have received the tainted calcium gluconate just before the recall of all products. The drug causes bloodstream infections due to a non-sterile bacteria called Rhodococcus equi.
The company issued a voluntary recall of all products distributed after May 9, 2013. Specialty Compounding distributes products to not only Texas hospitals and clinics, but directly to patients all across the country.
Calcium Gluconate does not combat any disease. Its purpose is to bring up calcium levels and counterbalance higher levels of magnesium or potassium. Compounding pharmacies mix customized injections, per a doctor’s request. They are supposed to be managed by fifty state boards of pharmacy, but as bigger companies emerge, they become harder to police.
Recently, at least two deaths occurred in connection with the New England Compounding Center, the company at the center of the fungal meningitis outbreak. Dr. Carmen Catizone, the director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy asked lawmakers to recognize these larger compounding facilities as manufacturers so that the FDA may monitor them.
Since 2001, there have been 75 reported deaths and more than 1,020 illnesses connected to compounded drugs.
