OxyElite Pro Linked to Liver Failure, FDA Investigating Hospitalizations and Death

According to NBC News, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a growing number of reports of non-viral hepatitis in Hawaii that have led to 11 hospitalizations and one death.

NBC reported that a common link between patients appears to be the dietary supplement OxyElite Pro, distributed by USPlabs LLC of Dallas and sold nationwide. The FDA said that there have been 29 reports of the liver-damaging condition, with 24 sharing the OxyElite connection. Two patients have reportedly received liver transplants.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is also investigating cases related to the supplement, according to NBC. The FDA announced that USPlabs LLC would stop distributing the drug, as the company believes that counterfeit versions of the product may be being sold. The FDA said that it would investigate claims related to potential counterfeit versions of the product.

“In the interest of protecting public health, we are moving quickly to learn as much as possible,” the FDA said in a statement. “We recognize that people will be concerned about these illnesses, and we will provide updates as the investigation develops.”

Last month, the FDA reported that about 70 percent of the nation’s supplement companies have violated manufacturing regulations over the past five years.
