Is Breast Growth a Side Effect of Risperdal?

The anti-psychotic drug Risperdal has been linked to skin complications, hyperprolactinaemia, and weight gain. And, some young men who have been prescribed the drug have allegedly grown female breasts (called “Gynecomastia.”)
Many of the young men who have been prescribed the drug may not have needed it. In 2013, Risperdal manufacturer Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay more than $2.2 billion in fines to settle accusations that it improperly promoted the antipsychotic drug to children and people with developmental disabilities. It was one of the largest drug settlements in U.S. history at the time of the announcement.

Risperdal Breast Growth Injury Lawsuit

According to Fierce Pharma, a trial recently began in Philadelphia, accusing Johnson & Johnson of marketing Risperdal “for use in young boys and then not sufficiently warning patients that the side effects for some included the possibility they would grow breasts.”

The plaintiff involved in the lawsuit claims that he began to take ‘off-label’ Risperdal when he was 8 years old. He now allegedly has female breasts, which can only be removed through a mastectomy.

The man claims that his family was not properly informed about the risks associated with the drug.
