According to the Southeast Texas Record, a woman has filed a lawsuit after she says she suffered from blood clots caused by taking the birth control Yaz (generic name drospirenone).
The Record reported that Kathryn Shurbet filed the lawsuit against Yaz manufacturers Bayer Healthcare, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc., Bayer Corp., Berlex Laboratories Inc., and Bayer Schering Pharma A.G. on December, 20, 2013.
The lawsuit was filed in Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division. It claims Ms. Shurbet was diagnosed with multiple pulmonary emboli after she began taking Yaz. According to the complaint, she began taking the oral contraceptive in 2006, and took it until she began suffering from multiple blood clots in 2010.
“Despite the fact that Defendants knew or should have known of the serious health risks associated with the use of Yaz, Defendants failed to adequately warn Plaintiff and/or her health care providers of said serious risks before she used the products,” the lawsuit said.
Shurbet is seeking compensation for pain, suffering, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and medical expenses, as well as punitive damages.
There are multiple lawsuits pending across the country over Yaz, or Yasmin and Ocella, which have been linked to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is formation of blood clots deep in leg veins. The clots are particularly dangerous in that they often break loose from their original positions and travel around the bloodstream, even causing pulmonary embolisms in the victim’s lungs. The clots can also travel to a person’s heart, causing heart attacks, or to the brain, which can cause strokes.
