According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the trial for two women who have filed a lawsuit against Takeda Pharmaceuticals over the drug Actos was expected to begin last week.
The Review-Journal reported that Delores Cipriano, 81, of Henderson and Bertha Triana, 80, of Las Vegas each filed lawsuits last year in District Court against Takeda, alleging the drug caused them to develop bladder cancer.
Triana was diagnosed with bladder cancer in May 2012 after taking Actos for about two years. Cipriano was diagnosed with bladder cancer in July 2012 after taking the drug for 14 months.
The women’s cases have been combined and they seek a multi-billion dollar verdict, which would be the highest compensation awarded at any trial in Nevada’s state history. The trial is expected to last 8 to 10 weeks; jury selection was completed in February.
In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that using Actos for more than one year might be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer.
At the same time, a federal trial involving hundreds of consolidated Actos cases is taking place in Louisiana. Experts have told the media that they expect the Las Vegas and Louisiana trials to end around the same time.
