Pfizer Agrees to $325 Million Settlement Over Alleged Neurontin Fraudulent Advertising Claims
According to Reuters, Pfizer agreed earlier this month to pay $325 million to resolve claims that it defrauded insurers and other healthcare providers by marketing Neurontin for unapproved uses.
The news outlet reported that it was the second major settlement for the drug manufacturer over the epilepsy drug in the last six weeks. On April 21, the company agreed to pay $430 million and to plead guilty to criminal charges for illegally marketing Neurontin for unapproved uses such as migraine headaches and pain.
Plaintiffs’ alleged that Pfizer and its Warner-Lambert Co unit sold Neurontin for uses that it was neither approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for, nor medically effective as, in an effort to boost profit. As part of the settlement, the drug maker did not admit to any wrongdoing.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Neurontin has been linked to:
- Dizziness and drowsiness
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Weight gain
- Peripheral edema
- Diarrhea
