According to CBS Boston, a woman has filed a Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) lawsuit after the birth control device broke free inside of her and became lodged in her abdomen.
The woman, who shared only her first name with the network, said that her Mirena IUD caused her tremendous pain and required surgery to remove it. The woman said that after she had two kids, she had the device inserted into her uterus.
Shortly after the implant was made, the woman reportedly began to suffer painful symptoms, including having two periods a month, and went to the doctor thinking she may have cancer. The doctor eventually ordered an X-ray, which showed that the Mirena IUD perforated her uterus and was loose in her abdomen. She had to have surgery to remove the device.
A Mirena IUD is a flexible plastic, t-shaped device that slowly releases hormones. If a woman wants to try to conceive a child, she can pull the device out by the strings attached to the bottom of it.
Currently, more than 2 million women in the U.S. have been implanted with Mirena IUDs, which have been linked to dislocation. WEWS-TV in Cleveland reported recently that since 2008, 4,775 women have reported that the device dislocated in them, or became embedded in the uterus after its initial placement.
