According to the Lincoln Journal Star, a Nebraska woman has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer Inc. alleging that the company failed to warn her about the risk of diabetes associated with the cholesterol drug Lipitor.
The woman, Jodie Ward, filed the first lawsuit of its kind in the U.S. District Court in Nebraska, although a number of Lipitor cases are currently pending in a multi-district litigation (MDL) in South Carolina.
Ward claims that Pfizer knew about data linking Lipitor to Type 2 diabetes, but continued to sell, promote and market the drug. Ward reportedly used Lipitor between September 2002 and December 2011. She was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2004.
Due to her diagnosis, Ward must now undergo regular blood testing and adhere to a strict diet. She also must take other medications to control her diabetes.
Ward also said that her diagnosis puts her at risk for heart disease, blindness, neuropathy and kidney disease.
Can I Sue Pfizer If I Got Diabetes From Lipitor?
Lipitor has been linked to Type 2 diabetes in women for several years, even though Pfizer continues to market and sell the drug. In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration asked Pfizer to make labeling changes on the product based on an agency review that included clinical trial data.
The label changes included words cautioning users about the potential for increased risks in glucose levels when using statins.
Diabetes causes multiple debilitating effects and can reduce a person’s life expectancy. Do not become the victim of a drug manufacturer’s carelessness—if you suffer from diabetes because you took Lipitor, seek legal representation today.
