Tylenol (acetaminophen) has been linked to complications including liver failure and the drug is associated with an estimated 17,000 overdose situations each year.
According to TIME, the rise in the sale of rise in prescriptions and non-prescription use of painkillers in the U.S. has led to skyrocketing overdose cases.
“Acetaminophen, which includes Tylenol and other generic brands, causes more than 80,000 emergency room visits each year because people often aren’t aware they’re taking too much,” Time reported.
Recently, the U.S. National Library of Medicine reported that acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause for calls to Poison Control Centers. Additionally, the drug is responsible for nearly “50 percent of all acute liver failure in this country.”
Earlier this year, the issue became so bad that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) sent out a safety warning saying that large doses of acetaminophen could be unsafe to a patient’s liver.
