Woman Files Mirena IUD Lawsuit After Device Becomes Lodged in Abdomen

A woman in South Carolina has filed a Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) lawsuit after the product caused serious injuries.

The lawsuit was filed on November 12 in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina and joins the hundreds of others filed around the country for similar injuries.

In her lawsuit, Melissa Vinson claims that the contraceptive device injured her to the point that she needed multiple surgical procedures.

After a follow up with a doctor, who tried to remove the device using its strings, which failed, Vinson had to undergo a hysteroscopy to remove the device—however, because of its location, a doctor was unable to proceed with the procedure.

Eventually, Vinson had to undergo a more invasive procedure in order to have the device removed. During the invasive procedure, doctors located the device in her abdomen and it broke while it was being removed, further complicating the procedure.

It should be noted that more than 2 million women in the U.S. have been implanted with Mirena IUDs, which have been linked to dislocation. According to WEWS-TV in Cleveland, since 2008, 4,775 women have reported that the device dislocated in them, or became embedded in the uterus after its initial placement.
